{"id":1893,"date":"2017-03-14T22:16:33","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T22:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/advising\/?page_id=1893"},"modified":"2019-03-18T14:18:46","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T14:18:46","slug":"internationalstudents","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/intranet.missouriwestern.edu\/advising\/bestpractices\/accuracy\/internationalstudents\/","title":{"rendered":"Advising International Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"background-color: rgba(255,255,255,0);background-position: center center;background-repeat: no-repeat;padding-top:0px;padding-right:30px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:30px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-top: 0px;border-width: 0px 0px 0px 0px;border-color:#eae9e9;border-style:solid;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_2_3 2_3 fusion-two-third fusion-column-first\" style=\"width:65.3333%; margin-right: 4%;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\" style=\"transform:translate3d(0,0,0);\"><p>These immigration rules only apply to the following visa types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>F-1 visa (degree seeking, or in the University\u2019s Intensive English Program)<\/li>\n<li>J-1 visa (non-degree seeking, usually exchange student and faculty)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These federal regulations do NOT apply to students who are legal permanent residents, or who are here on other visa types.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Full-time enrollment<\/strong><br \/>International students must be enrolled in a \u201cfull course of study\u201d in fall and spring semesters (students are not required to take summer classes).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A \u201cfull course of study\u201d for undergraduate students is a minimum of 12 credit hours.<\/li>\n<li>A \u201cfull course of study\u201d for graduate students is 8 or 9 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Online courses<\/strong><br \/>Only <strong>ONE<\/strong> online course may be taken per semester towards the \u201cfull course of study\u201d requirement.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If a student is taking 12 undergraduate credits, only one 3 credit online class may be taken per semester.<\/li>\n<li>However, if an undergraduate student takes more classes than required by the \u201cfull course of study\u201d requirement, that student may be enrolled in more than one online class. For example, if a student takes 15 credit hours, that student can enroll in two 3 credit hour online classe<\/li>\n<li>Please note that government scholarship students from Saudi Arabia also have rules regarding online classes through the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM) that are more stringent than the U. federal government requirements. Those students are individually responsible for following SACM requirements. We also have a number of government sponsored students from other countries who are individually responsible for meeting their scholarship requirements. The ISS is the University\u2019s point of contact for government sponsoring agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dropping or withdrawing from classes<\/strong><br \/>If a student drops or withdraws from classes at any point during the semester and falls below full time (i.e. no longer meets the \u201cfull course of study\u201d requirement), that student is automatically \u201cout of status\u201d and risk losing their student visa.\u00a0 Therefore, contact or notify the International Student Services immediately if this is under discussion.\u00a0 International Student Services places an IS holds on students\u2019 accounts during the semester to help prevent this problem.\u00a0 The IS hold is automatically lifted the day before early or pre-registration begins for the next semester.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Communication tips<\/strong><br \/>When working with international students, communication is key.\u00a0 Here are some important things to remember:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Actively listens, and understand the questions, concerns, or issues for a cultural context or perspective.\u00a0 Find out the underlying concern.\u00a0 Students talk\/learn from other students, and unfortunately, the information may be wrong, a myth, or not applicable at Missouri Western.<\/li>\n<li>Do not be afraid to ask for clarification if you do not understand the message\u00a0the student is trying to say or convey.\u00a0 The miscommunication\u00a0could be due to doubt with American English pronunciation, or the use of the\u00a0English word.\u00a0 It is acceptable to\u00a0tell the student you are trying to understand him\/her and ask if the\u00a0student could\u00a0provide additional information, provide examples or give explanation.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that international students are total strangers to the American culture and norm.\u00a0 University internal bureaucracy, \u201cthe way we do things,\u201d critical thinking, or even, the \u201cway we think\u201d may not be the norm around the world. Often, international parents are also strangers to the U.S. education system, and are therefore, unable to provide any guidance to the student.\u00a0 International students appreciate hand-outs, printed materials, to-do lists, etc., to read or absorb in a less stressful time (yes, meeting an advisor or faculty can be stressful).<\/li>\n<li>An international student\u2019s activities, actions, or future career may be limited by the U.S. immigration regulation and policies.\u00a0 For example, students are expected to maintain \u201cgood academic standing\u201d at all times, cannot work off-campus without written authorization, and cannot drop enrollment below full time without prior approval.<\/li>\n<li>International students are not all the same!\u00a0\u00a0Many\u00a0studies, research\u00a0articles have been published regarding effective cross-cultural communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Working on-campus<\/strong><br \/>F-1 and J-1 students are allowed to apply and accept employment on-campus up to 20 hours\/week during the fall and spring semesters. During school breaks and summer, students may work up to 37.5 hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Curricular Practical Training (CPT)<\/strong><br \/>Students who have been in valid F1 status in the U.S. for at least nine months or two academic semesters and are in good academic standing may be eligible to apply for CPT<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Per 8 C.F.R. \u00a7 214.2(f)(10)(i)\u201c<em>Curricular practical training.<\/em>\u00a0An F-1 student may be authorized by the Designated School Official (DSO) to participate in a curricular practical training program that<strong> is an integral part of an established curriculum<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A student may begin CPT only <strong>after<\/strong> receiving his or her Form I-20 with ISS office endorsement.<\/li>\n<li>The student must continue to be enrolled for a <strong>full-time course of study<\/strong> during the internships or cooperative education UNLESS they are in their last semester and have been approved for less than full-time enrollment.<\/li>\n<li>CPT or internships that are optional (not required for degree completion) cannot interfere with the normal progress toward graduation.<\/li>\n<li>Internships during fall\/spring semesters may be taken on a part-time basis (up to 20 hours\/week); internships may be part-time or full-time during summer or university breaks.<\/li>\n<li>There is a risk a student will have their OPT application (post-completion employment authorization) denied if they cannot prove to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that the CPT was an <em>integral <\/em>and required part of their program necessary to graduate with the chosen degree.<\/li>\n<li>Students should complete and submit the CPT application form with a signature from the academic advisor to the DSO\/PDSO at the International Student Services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Optional Practical Training (OPT)<\/strong><br \/>It is an opportunity for F-1 visa students to work off campus and gain relevant work experience in the major field of study, for a limited period of time after graduation. The ISS offers regularly scheduled workshops each fall or spring semester to provide information and guidance on the timely OPT filing process.<\/p>\n<p>Please note: The rules regarding international students are ever changing.
