The Center for Academic Support provides collaborative connection between students, faculty, and staff. With a variety of presentations, we are happy to pair with and present to students in a handful of ways and locations. With this, we will also hold a handful of workshops throughout the semester.
The CAS – Study Smarter
A breakdown of our services; the Center for Academic Support provides free tutoring for all MWSU students either in-person or online. Services include math, writing, content, Supplemental Instruction, and Embedded Tutoring. This presentation will help attendees learn what to expect at an appointment and how to schedule an appointment through TracCloud.
Included: Discussion and free flashcards, pencils and bookmarks to attendees.

First Semester College Success: Things You Don’t Know You Don’t Know!
An introduction to changes in college. This presentation focuses on three success strategies: How to write an email to a professor, why a syllabus is important, and the benefits of attending class. Built in, attendees will have the chance for discussion and connection. (Presentation recommended during the first 1-3 weeks of the semester.)

Time Management & Goal Setting
An overview of S.M.A.R.T. goals and healthy time management, this interactive session can be done in a computer lab or in a lecture classroom. The presentation as a whole helps students think about priorities and the amount of study time it takes to be a successful student. Discussion will revolve around the benefits of scheduling and understand time usage, then each student will create a weekly calendar using the strategies discussed in the presentation. Handouts, including calendar pages, can be provided.

A Guide to Good Note-Taking
An interactive workshop that reviews the importance of note-taking and reviews different systems of note-taking based on styles of courses and disciplines. Starts with an assessment of current note-taking habits, then discusses different styles of note-taking before ending on an activity where students practice what they learned during the presentation with a mini-lecture.

Perspectives When Studying
An interactive workshop on good academic study habits including spaced studying, retrieval practice, and passive vs active engagement. Starts with an engaging activity, then discuss metacognition and related study strategies before practicing certain techniques together as a group. This presentation also briefly touches on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Test Taking Strategies & Test Anxiety
This presentation explores strategies that help students before, during, and after exams to improve their academic performance and confidence. The workshop breaks down text anxiety cycle and offers practical tips and strategies to break that cycle through preparation and reflection.

APA In-Text Citation Workshop
A brief introduction to APA style and citation with a focus on in-text citation and source integration. Includes an activity where students practice writing paragraphs that include narrative and parenthetical APA citation. This workshop can be expanded to discuss title pages, reference pages, and other APA style conventions.

How to Study For Finals
A clear focus on study skills; start early and don’t get behind is one strong way to study for finals. Attendees will get knowledge and tips on what to expect for the upcoming finals season. We recommend this presentation 3-4 weeks before finals week.

Tutor Requirements
Content Tutors:
- MWSU Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Degree Seeking student
- Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
- Passed the course they will tutor with a B or better
- Recommended by MWSU Faculty teaching the course
Math Tutors:
- MWSU Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Degree Seeking student
- Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
- Passed at least one college level math course with a B or better
- Recommended by two MWSU Faculty members
Writing Tutors:
- MWSU Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Degree Seeking student
- Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
- Passed ENG104 and ENG108 (or ETC200) with a B or better
- Recommended by two MWSU Faculty members
SI Leaders:
- MWSU Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Degree Seeking student
- Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
- Passed the SI course with a B or better
- Recommended by MWSU Faculty teaching the course
- Be able to attend class meetings for the SI course
