Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of regularly scheduled, out-of-class group study and content review sessions.

SI sessions are:

  • Weekly sessions that students can voluntarily attend throughout the semester.
  • Facilitated by a trained student-peer leader who guides with engaging activities to encourage small group interaction.
  • Free to currently enrolled MWSU students.
  • A collaborative, student-centered learning experience.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact the Tutor Coordinator at 816-271-4531.

Benefits of SI Sessions

  • All students, regardless of grade standing, benefit from attending SI because sessions are geared to mastering challenging course concepts.
  • Group study sessions can be much more effective and efficient than studying alone.
  • On average, students who regularly attend SI sessions perform at least half a letter grade higher than those who do not attend.

BECOME AN SI LEADER

Effective SI Leaders are essential to the success of Supplemental Instruction. CAS is looking for individuals who have strong interpersonal communication skills, enjoy engaging in a dynamic group environment, and have earned a sufficient level of competency in the targeted SI course. Applicants should be highly motivated, organized, reliable, and able to work independently with limited supervision.

For consideration, candidates must meet or exceed the following qualifications:

  • Enrollment as an MWSU undergraduate student
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0
  • Maintain minimum semester GPA: 3.0 while employed at CAS
  • Successful completion (grade of B or higher) in course you desire to lead
  • Recommendation from the course professor.

SI Leaders organize and plan sessions to reinforce understanding of difficult course concepts using collaborative learning activities and study techniques. Because SI Leaders previously completed the course with a high level of competency, SI Leaders are equipped to share knowledge from a more experienced perspective.

In addition to helping your fellow students succeed academically, being a SI leader is a great way to engage in and build community at Missouri Western. The leadership experience, people skills, and network connections you forge through your participation in the SI program will have lasting influence on your journey beyond college.
